Almost everyone at sometime in their lives will use some form of complementary medicine. Something for a minor ache or pain, a massage to relax cramped muscles, a yoga or meditation class to rejuvenate the mind and body. For those in countries that have a history of traditional medicine this is nothing new although these therapeutic techniques are not part of conventional medicine. However a growing body of people now believes that complementary medical techniques such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage, meditation and yoga, and even support groups have definite value when used in conjunction with conventional medicine and more information and research is required to get the true benefit of these techniques.

Conventional medicine has been proven to be safe and effective through rigorous testing. Scientific research on complementary therapies is relatively new, studies are small and some have not been done in a clinical setting. Meetings such as the Sixth International Congress on Complementary Medicine Research seeks to address these issues by putting together methods and programs to enhance communication and collaboration, facilitate exchange of information between researchers, clinicians, experts and health policy makers worldwide, promote research on complementary and integrative medicine. The Congress will be held in Chengdu from May 7th to 9th and is organized by the International Society of Complementary Medicine Research, the Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Journal of Integrative Medicine, Chinese Evidence Based Medicine Centre and the Chinese Network of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Other participating and collaborating institutions include the World Federation of Acupuncture – Moxibustion Societies, the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, PEDCAM Network Canada, The Society of Sasang Constitutional Medicine Korea, Korean Oriental Society, and the Korean Institute of Oriental Medicine.

By bringing together experts on complementary and alternative medicine, presenting latest results on research, discussing concepts, methodologies and strategies, self regulation, role in disease prevention and public health, the annual meeting seeks to further the benefits of complementary medicine to reach a wider audience. This is the first time that the Congress is being held in Asia.
