If you’re a pregnant woman, you should be filled with joy and happiness at this special time in your life. You probably have so much on your plate. Everything from deciding on a name, painting the baby’s room, and enjoying your baby shower with your friends and family. It is certainly a hectic but joyful time in life. But unfortunately many women, especially as their pregnancy progresses, can begin to experience severe lower back pain.

This does not only pose a problem for your daily tasks and chores, but it also affects the quality of your life. This is particularly sad since this is supposed to be a joyful time in your life.

Of course you can figure out that the back pain is being caused by all the weight you’re gaining during your pregnancy. As your stomach starts to protrude, it can start to pull you forward and throw off your balance. You then instinctively lean your upper body backward more to keep your balance better. This puts a lot of pressure on your lower back and on your hips. This kind of position only accentuates the curvature of your back.

That might make sense, but there is more to back pain during pregnancy. Muscle imbalances can cause almost all cases of back pain, not just in pregnant women, but in all people out there in society.

Muscle tone and strength is among the most important factor to consider in keeping your back healthy and fit. Your muscles should move evenly and with balance when you move your joints. When one muscle tightens, another loosens. Both of these muscles should respond equally. Otherwise, you have muscle imbalances.

As a pregnant woman, your growing belly will require that every move you make from walking (or waddling), sitting, sleeping, or bending over be adjusted and your muscles will need to shift to accommodate. You might already have muscle imbalances, but they will only be made worse by your pregnancy.

Your bones and joints will take up the bulk of the stress caused by these imbalances. You have twenty-four bones in your spine. The weight of your body is normally distributed evenly by your back and pelvis. But if just one of those 24 bones becomes slightly out of alignment, then your muscles have to do over time to carry the weight. When this happens, back pain and back injury are much more likely for you.

At this point your pregnancy becomes a painful thing to endure. It is unfortunate that a pregnancy, the time in a woman’s life that is normally full of joy and happiness, should become filled with pain and suffering.
